Week of November 18th
In lab today we looked over our past test scores and got to see areas that we struggled. We then talked about the article we read last week and compared it to an article we read in the previous weeks. We then talked about SWH and how it can affect students in schools. Students that get taught with SWH recieve better grades than students who don't do that approach. This approach also helps students with IEP's. We learned that "Climate is what you expect. Weather is what you get". Weather is day to day, climat is the average of weather over the THIRTY-year period. We then as a table group read articles to find data that supports that climate change is happening. Big question: What type of data do we have that supports that climate change is happening? We divided the 5 articles up as a group to read and then share. We wrote our evidence on a whiteboard (shown below) and shared with other groups. The main effect in Iowa is the extreme heat and how it can affect livestock and illnesses to them and humans.
In the pressbook, I learned that weather is what is happening NOW and climate is what is happening USUALLY. It then talked about the factors determine whether an areas has a hot or cold climate which is L.O.W.E.R. Near water. Which stands for L=Latitude, O=Ocean currents, W=Wind and air masses, E=Elevation, R=Relief (topography), and Near water= In the summer, water can act like a air conditioner to keep temperatures cool. In the winter, water can act like a heater to get the temperatures from getting too cool. The article also then talked about how climate change is happening now in Iowa and is affecting all of us. This has caused hotter temperatures, made an impact on agriculture, including floods and uneven precipitation and drought.
During lecture we talked about the climate depot. For this we saw that google says that global warming has "pauses". We used this time to ask questions about this google post. We looked at a graph and asked some questions such as, What would it look like if it was in Fahrenheit and not Celsius?, Where was this graph taken place?, etc. We then saw the author of this website was a major in political science and not climate science. From this we can understand that not everything on google is correct and it truly matters who the authors are. KNOW WHERE THINGS ARE COMING FROM!! Most people in the world; 99% of science believe climate change is real and is human caused. We then went over of why some regions ave a hot climate and others cold? This is L.O.W.E.R Near water. L (latitude= distance from the equator is a key factor in determining if the climate is cold or hot_, O (Ocean currents= temperature of the ocean current affects the temperatures of air passes over it), W (Wind and air mass= a large volume of air that takes over the climate conditions of where the area is formed), E (Elevation= The higher the altitude the cooler the temperatures, As air rises it expands because of the lower air pressure; cooler), R (Relief= precipitation that is created when the air masses rise to cross a mountain barrier), and Near water (in summer, water acts like an air conditioner, and in winter, water acts like a heater; Continental climate (away from water), Maritime Climate (Close to water)). Other evidence of climate change is the glacier retreat. We then talked about the convection currents. We then also talked about sea level changed (rises). We learned as water heats up it expands. Greenhouse gases are also making our oceans becoming warmer. Lastly, we then went over a few topics of the Paris agreement.
