In lab we talked about the movie we had to watch last week and went over Climate Change. We talked about the main points from the documentary. We then looked at the nasa website and saw a picture of land from 30 years ago to now. The picture changed over the 30 years and is not almost all water. We then looked at other forms of land that has been affected over time. We then looked at our investigation question for the week: Is the Goldfinch (Iowa's state bird) in danger? How do we know?. We split up the regions of Iowa as a class. My group got the Southeast region of Iowa, where the University of Iowa is. We then searched the precipitation (threshold) over 1.5 in Iowa city, Fairfield, and Mount Pleasant. After doing some math we found that in our area (southeast region of Iowa) we found that we had a 5.88% decrease of precipitation over time. From looking data and articles, We found that the Iowa Goldfinch will be in danger due to the higher temperatures and the inconsistency of precipitation. This can effect where the Goldfinch can adapt.
This weeks pressbook talked about rocks and rock cycles. I learned about the 3 main types of rocks metamorphic, igneous, and sedimentary. This weeks pressbook was very similar to lab last week as it talked about geodes and archimedes principle. A geode is Iowa state rock and forms when a cavity forms in a rock. Archimedes principle is where the weight of the displaced liquid is equal to the weight of the object. Lastly, it then talked about Weathering and Erosion and talked about the 2 types of weathering which are mechanical and chemical. Lastly, the pressbook went over sand and the different characteristics of sand based off the weathering of wind vs water.
In lecture we had a test! No questions for this week!
